To move to Mexico as a permanent resident, you will need to meet certain requirements set by the Mexican government. These requirements may vary depending on your specific circumstances, such as your country of origin, the purpose of your move, and your intended length of stay in Mexico. In this post, I am focusing on Americans who are citizens of the United States of America and want to apply for a temporary resident to permanent resident visa. This is not a tourist visa or working visa.
Generally, you will need to obtain a temporary permanent resident visa, which is a document that allows you to live in Mexico indefinitely, you will need to apply for a temporary permanent visa. To apply for a temporary permanent residence visa, you will need to complete the application and provide the following documents:
- A valid passport
- Birth certificate
- Police clearance certificate
- Proof of sufficient financial resources to support yourself and any dependents
- Medical certificate
- Proof of residence in Mexico (e.g. rental contract, property deed)
You may also need to pass a medical exam and show that you have adequate health insurance coverage.

- Financial or Economic Solvency for Mexican Temporary Resident Visa taken from the consulmex.sre.gob.mx. For Financial or Economic Solvency: You must choose options of investment/bank account funds or pension/employment statements:
- Investment or bank accounts with a monthly ending balance of at least 5,000 days of the current general minimum wage in Mexico City (approx. $43,000.00 USD). To prove this, you need to provide:
- Employment or Pension that yields a monthly income of at least 300 days of the current general minimum wage in Mexico City (approx. $2,500.00 USD) after taxes, during each of the previous 6 months. To prove this, you need to provide:
- Pension: The original or most recent letter from the Social Security or Pension issuer indicating the monthly amount that you receive and monthly certified financial statements in which that amount is reflected or the pension receipts for each of the last 6 months.
- Employment: Verification letter from your employer stating your employment commencement date, position title, and the salary you receive PLUS all paystubs for the last 6 months.
