I absolutely love Mexico City (CDMX), I have lived there for over a year and have explored several areas of the City. Now if you don’t know, Mexico City is THE largest city in North America (Yes, NYC is second) and there is so much to explore. But while exploring you need to be safe. I’m a solo female traveler and much of my exploration of Mexico City has been alone. Even though I feel relatively safe in Mexico City, you need to be aware of your surroundings. As great as Mexico City is, I feel that is top tier for pickpocketers, small and petty theft. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and alert when exploring Mexico City.
Take a picture of any taxi you get in AND discuss the price before. Taxis are notorious for swindling tourists. Make sure you agree on the price before you get in and you have a picture of the licenses plate before you step in the taxi. To go the extra mile, it’s best to share your location while traveling with at least 2 to 3 friends or family.
You can also use ride/car share apps like Uber and Didi. Didi is very popular in Mexico.
Don’t carry BIG purses. Tourists stick out like a sore thumb when they are carrying large purses. Especially in tourist areas. Make sure that you are carrying a smaller purse, cross body, or Fanny Pack so it is harder for pickpocketers to target you. I was with someone who had their entire wallet stolen from their big purse. The next day after it happened, I went to a local coffee shop and talked to a friend whose friend was in town and got their wallet stolen a week prior.
Travel in with another person or group at night. Mexico City is beautiful at night, but as a solo female, you might want to join an expat group or meet up group so that you can see the beautiful city at night. This goes for all the “popular” areas like Roma or Condessa. Crime doesn’t discriminate against neighborhoods.
Getting lost in a city as beautiful and exciting as Mexico City is easy to do, but just like any other city, you will need to stay vigilant. Especially, if you are traveling alone as a solo female traveler. If you are traveling to Mexico City soon or have traveled there, you leave your experience in the comments.

There are several Facebook groups for people of color and expats. Also, CDMX is great for making friends everywhere!
